Community Forklift is one of thirty nonprofits awarded a 2024 Prince George’s County Local Impact Grant. Administered through the Local Development Council and County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks, the award supports our community giving programs that provide free materials to households with limited incomes and nonprofit groups. In particular, the grant is helping expand our efforts to serve families, schools, and nonprofits in Prince George’s County communities located within a six-mile radius of the MGM Resort in Oxon Hill, Maryland.
Thanks to the Local Impact Grant, we have formed new partnerships with local nonprofits through our Community Building Blocks (CBB) program. Community Forklift’s Home Essentials Program (HELP) is also assisting families in the area who need appliances and home improvement materials.
The Gift Legacy Foundation and the Mushroom Learning Center
Community Forklift donated 75 boxes of vinyl plank flooring to the Clinton, MD, nonprofit. The Gift Legacy Foundation is converting shipping containers into its Mushroom Learning Center, complete with a mycology lab, incubation chambers, and mushroom fruiting chambers.
According to the foundation’s Executive Director, Elizabeth Robinson, the project “will bring enormous benefits to the community, including the creation of 20 new jobs, an increase in local food production by 200,000 pounds annually, and numerous economic and educational opportunities for kids, families, farmers, and more.”
Creative Suitland Arts Center
Our CBB program also provided vinyl tile flooring to the Creative Suitland Arts Center, an arts-based nonprofit that plans to enhance its 480-square-foot gallery. The vibrant gathering space in Suitland, MD, offers free and affordable arts and cultural programs, artist services, and more.
Potomac High School
Community Forklift provided two free refrigerators to Potomac High School in Oxon Hill, MD. The gently used appliances are destined for their Teachers’ Lounge.
A Neighbor in Need
Community Forklift’s HELP program supplied a free refrigerator to a household with limited resources in Fort Washington, MD. “The fridge works great,” the resident said. “Thanks so much! It fits perfectly!”
Community Forklift collects donations of new and gently used building materials and home essentials and redistributes them for free through our community giving programs and at below market prices through our warehouse store. Our CBB program provides mini-grants of store credit to community groups and nonprofits. Our HELP program is a low-barrier service that provides free gently used materials to households with limited resources.
We are committed to uplifting our community through reuse and we encourage eligible households and organizations in the DMV to learn more about our community giving programs and apply online. We also look forward to expanding our services in the Local Impact Grant area’s 6-mile radius of the MGM resort. Please visit our website to learn more.

Every time you donate or shop at Community Forklift, you’re helping us lift up local communities through reuse. We turn the construction waste stream into a resource stream for communities in the DC region – by keeping perfectly good items out of the landfill, preserving historical materials, providing low-cost building supplies, and creating local green jobs.
