The front entrance at Cooper Lane Elementary School (CLES) in Landover, Maryland, got an upgrade this month: some fabulous new seating! Working with the school’s Community School Coordinator, Nahema Witt, Community Forklift provided two free contemporary sofas and armchairs for the school’s Family Welcome Area.
“The CLES welcome area provides a space for staff, parents, community partners, and stakeholders to convene and collaborate in a central location located in the main lobby of the school,” Nahema wrote in an email. In order to provide this space for the community, the Welcome Area needed additional resources and support.
As the Community School Coordinator, Nahema works to identify school needs, implement programs and services to meet those needs, and then involve school administration and community members to support those programs and services. In order to support the Family Welcome Area, Nahema applied to Community Forklift’s Community Building Blocks (CBB) program and we were able to provide gently-used furniture for the space.

More than 50% of our students received free and reduced lunch and families still struggle to make ends meet to provide for their families. We have worked to build a better future through healthy food, access to basic needs, and quality education by student data and growth that are shared with all stakeholders who we work with together for continuous improvement.”
Our Community Building Blocks program distributes free materials to nonprofits, schools, and community groups for projects that serve the greater community. This program is just one of the ways that Community Forklift lifts up the community through reuse, but we can’t provide this support without your help!
