Community Forklift and the Anacostia Watershed Society team up to keep canoes in use and accessible.

We know at Community Forklift that the value of materials doesn’t end when an item’s owner no longer needs it — it’s just the start of a new story. That’s why we’re thrilled to partner with the Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) to give their excess canoes and kayaks new homes. AWS has long worked to protect and restore the Anacostia River, engaging local communities for a clean, safe, and accessible watershed.

This partnership benefits our shared community in multiple ways. By keeping these canoes in circulation, we help prevent materials from ending up in the landfill and we give people affordable ways to explore the Anacostia and surrounding waterways. Each purchase supports both organizations, advancing AWS’s river stewardship and Community Forklift’s mission of building a stronger, greener community through reuse.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to work together with AWS on this project. By combining our missions, we’re connecting more people with local waterways, keeping materials in motion, and supporting the broader community. A paddle taken in one of these canoes is a small but meaningful step toward a healthier watershed and a more connected community.

The kayaks have already found new owners, but there are still canoes available for purchase! Visit the listing on the Community Forklift Marketplace to learn more.

Every time you donate or shop at Community Forklift, you’re helping us lift up local communities through reuse.  We turn the construction waste stream into a resource stream for communities in the DC region – by keeping perfectly good items out of the landfill, preserving historical materials, providing low-cost building supplies, and creating local green jobs.
