In September of 2019, the Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy (MCAEL) gathered a group of organizations and community members to decorate doors for a project called “A County of Neighbors”. With support from Community Forklift’s Community Building Blocks Program, MCAEL distributed doors and paint to Montgomery County organizations that then decorated the doors to express how residents of all backgrounds are welcome in their community.
MCAEL’s project aims to build strong connections across communities and affirm the benefits of welcoming all residents. It was coordinated as part of Welcoming Week, an annual series of events started by Welcoming America. Thanks to MCAEL’s contribution to Welcoming Week, they were one of the 80,000+ people and 250+ communities that joined the movement. Check out this video profile of their project!
MCAEL is a community coalition of public, nonprofit, and business partners that helps adults gain the English literacy skills needed to reach their potential as parents, workers, and community members. They support more than 70 adult English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs, 1,500 instructors, and 20,000 adult learners.
